[6/9/07] Soulhat will perform at this year's Keep Austin Weird Fest, a 5K and festival sponsored by RunTex, on June 16. The race includes a festival that will feature live music, food, local businesses, tents and contests, and will last all day Saturday. Doors open at Republic Square Park from 11 a.m. and will close at 10 p.m. The 2007 Keep Austin Weird Fest is "Austin's celebration of all people, places and things that make Austin unique," according to advertisements for the run.

Music performances will include Bob Schneider, Alejandro Escovedo, South Austin Jug Band, Patricia Vonne, The Steps and Amy Cook. Food vendors including the Austin Farmer's Food Market, Lambert's, Amy's Ice Cream, the Salt Lick and Austin's Pizza, as well as the best local businesses featured in the Austin Chronicle's Best of Biz-aar!

[6/2/07] Kevin McKinney will join Bob Dylan, Bjork, The White Stripes, Wilco and dozens of other artists as part of this year's lineup at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Sept 14-16. Kevin will be promoting a new solo record, which should be released by the time of the festival. Three day wristbands are now sold-out but one-day passes go on sale June 19.

[5/1/07] Soulhat returns to Big D along with Special Guest Patrice Pike, on Saturday, June 2 at the Granada Theater, 3524 Greenville Ave, Dallas - 214/ 824-9933. Seems like old times! Get your tickets now (Doors at 8pm; Show at 9pm; 17+)!

[4/13/07] In sad, but not altogether unexpected, news the legendary Johnny Walker has been let go from KLBJ-FM. Johnny was one of the last, true rock n' roll deejays and has always been very good to Soulhat.

Johnny'll be missed, but we think it's safe to say that he'd probably outgrown the role Emmis was willing to offer him. Good luck to Johnny, and thanks for the years giving it to us from-the-heart.

[12/30/06] Soulhat will perform - with the classic lineup featuring Billy, Kevin, Brian and Frosty - on Friday, January 5 at Antone's in Austin and Saturday, January 6 at Warehouse Live in Houston. It's a good, rare opportunity to catch the band in the Bayou City, so check em out. Kevin is also now performing regularly at the Hole in the Wall, Austin, on Thursdays at 10 pm. Check Austin paper for listings.

[8/23/06] Soulhat will be performing - again with Frosty on drums - on 9/9/2006 at Antone's. So if you're not lucky enough to have UT-Ohio State tickets (or even if you do), come on down afterward and get your groove on to the sounds of the classic Soulhat lineup.

[8/23/06] Sorry we had a rough transition last night with a server upgrade. Site should be back up for most everyone now. Let us know if you have any problems seeing anything or if any images/etc. missed the migration.

[7/23/06] Soulhat will be performing with Vallejo at Antone's in Austin on 7/28. Doors at 8. Show at 9. Frosty is reportedly on drums, so you'll definitely want to check this show out if you are in town.

Soulhat performed at an anonymous gig at Antone's last Saturday night, billed as Cliff's Notes. And yes, their new picture appeared in the paper alongside it. Undoubtedly inspired by the "Cliffie" emblazoned outside Antone's club on Fifth Street for so long. Could they be taking up the moniker, an inspired tribute to Austin's great blues loving son? We'll see. Stay tuned.

[6/15/06] Soulhat will be performing at the Studio at Warehouse Live in Houston on Saturday, July 8. For more information, click here.

[5/24/06] By now, many of you know that Clifford Antone - founder of Antone's - has passed on to that great gig in the sky. He was found dead of apparent heart failure on Tuesday. Like all of Austin, we mourn this larger-than-life character who brought so much love for the blues and for Austin music and musicians. To say "he will be missed greatly" is an understatement. Clifford WAS live music in Austin, and it will never be the same.

Note: A memorial celebration is planned for Clifford Antone at Antone's nightclub, 213 W. 5th St., at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24.

For more, please visit The Austin newspaper.

[3/22/06] Celebrate before you file your taxes with the Soulhat band and Shandon Sahm on 4/14 at Antone's.

[2/23/06] THE AUSTIN ICE BATS of the Central Hockey League announced the final addition to the team's "Budweiser True Music Concert Series," welcoming Austin favorites "Soulhat" in concert following the Ice Bats' home game on Saturday, February 25th. To charge by phone, fans may call the Ice Bats ticket office at 927-PUCK, Texas Box Office at (512) 477-6060, or Get Tix at 1-866-4-Get Tix.

[1/1/06] HAPPY NEW YEAR! Soulhat will be performing on January 21 (SAT), opening for the N. Mississippi All-Stars at La Zona Rosa in Austin. Doors are at 8 pm. Music starts at 9.

[12/3/05] HAPPY HOLIDAYS! What is Santa bringing you this year? How about two more Soulhat shows at Antone's on Dec. 16 and Dec. 17. Getting to be kind of a regular thing now, isn't it? We'll see you there and provide any updated information as we get it.

[8/30/05] If you missed them the first time, you get another shot. The classic Soulhat lineup - Bill, Kevin, Frosty & Brian - are playing KLBJ's "Austin Batfest 2005" on Sunday September 4, 2005 from 7 - 7:55 pm.

"Austin Batfest 2005" at the Congress Ave. Bridge between Cesar Chavez & Barton Springs on Sat., Sept. 3, 2005 to Sun., Sept. 4, 2005 from 11a-11p (Sat.) & 11a-9p (Sun.). "Austin Batfest 2005" is a celebration of Austin's Arts and Bats brought to you by Wells Fargo! Two stages of Live Music, 150 Arts & Crafts booths and 2 million Mexican Free-tail Bats! RECENTLY ADDED: new photos from Reunion Night 1 (7/7) and more from night 2 (7/8) are available here. A big thank you to Joe James for sharing these great photos !

[7/15/05] Friday night's performance was a perfect cap to the two-day run. Gone were the acoustic guitars and wide open spaces of Thursday. But the payoff was huge: from the opening notes of Good to Be Gone, the beast was back!

A sellout crowd grooved through about 135 minutes of boneshaking fury. Once again, the band mixed it up with a setlist that stretched from beginning (Barely, Better, My Man Joe, Garbage Man) to end (Luggage), to some crazy place inbetween (Stinkpot, Bonecrusher). The vibe onstage was exceptionally positive (lots of smiles and even some wackiness, when the band signed a fan's poster during a song). And with so many old school regulars in town for the event, there were moments when it honestly felt like being back at the Black Cat or Steamboat -- even Antone's -- circa 1992, when the Austin music scene was at it's vibrant, jamming best. It's been said that any time you can leave 'em wanting more, that's a good thing. And they did that -- Soulhat delivered big on an unexpected reunion that came to fruition in an amazing ... three weeks. Whew!

Thanks to the fine folks at Antone's for putting this together, and the countless others who will be bringing you tidbits from the run over the next few days.

[7/14/05] There's a nice article/ streaming video over at News8Austin, regarding Antone's 30th anniversary. It's not about Soulhat, mind you - though it first aired on 7/8 and does mention them - but the history of the club and why Clifford Antone built it. The video features an interview with Clifford and some great old photos of the venue and the blues legends who've graced its stage. The article is just the text copy of the news report, so we'd recommend paging down and clicking 'watch the video.'

[7/12/05] Things sure are getting fired-up over at etree! The ever and often torrent reseeding of classic old Soulhat shows continues unabated, with some great audio from 1992 and 1993. If you just don't want to dust off those old tapes - or never had them to begin with - this is a great place to find out how Soulhat got to be who they are. What's a torrent? Start by reading etree's FAQ. Then, get to sharing!

[7/12/05] Audience recordings of both reunion shows (Thursday & Friday) have now been seeded via torrent over at bt.etree.org. What's a torrent? Start by clicking here to read etree's FAQ. Then get connected! A big thank you to the tapers who have been so generous to share their recordings!

[7/12/05] You can hear Brian, Bill & Kevin on Friday's Eklektikos with John Aielli over at Soulhat Audio. The recording is about thirty minutes total length, with several interview segments, and four complete songs: Here, For The Drinkers, Talking to Plants, and Build It Up Tear It Down. Note: the 'document truncated' error in the last track has been fixed.

[7/8/05] More on last night's incredible acoustic set when we have a chance! Let's just say it was a little more raw than '96, but the band dug far deeper into its repertoire than usual: My Man Joe, Better, Barely, even Garbage Man! They stayed acoustic all night (though Brian was not on the stand-up bass), and ended the set with Mailbox around 1. Lots of great ol' familiar faces in the crowd. Setlist, pictures and more, soon!

For now, we'll leave you with this: Soulhat will be performing on Eklektikos with John Aielli on KUT-FM (90.5 Austin) at noon, today. Please tune-in and catch them if you're in town. And be sure and head down to Antone's tonight. Doors at 9:30, show at 10 with an opener. There was some space last night, but tonight will most likely be a blowout, so get there early if you don't have a ticket!

[7/9/05] The first photos are beginning to trickle down. Here are some selections from Friday night's show.

[7/8/05] Torrent alert: there is new torrent from the '93 H.O.R.D.E. Festival (7/5, Kansas City), from a previously uncirculated AKG source, over at bt.etree.org. The show features Soulhat, Col. Bruce Hampton & the ARU, Widespread Panic, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, The Samples, and Blues Traveler. Man, what a lineup that was, eh? Click here to join in.

[6/15/05] JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT IT WAS SAFE TO GO BACK IN THE WATER ... it's the 30th anniversary of Antone's, Austin's Home of the Blues!

Highlighting this year's 30th anniversary line-up of artists at Antone's are The Scabs, Vallejo, Guy Forsyth, a reunion of the band Storyville, and apparently -- now please don't fall out of your chair -- another set of Soulhat reunion shows! And this is the real deal, folks: Soulhat will reunite for two very special performances: Thursday, July 7th, will feature an acoustic-flavored show, followed by Friday night's (July 8) no-holds-barred electric set. These shows will feature the classic Soulhat line-up: Kevin McKinney (vocals, guitars), Bill Cassis (guitars), Barry 'FROSTY' Smith (drums) and Brian Walsh (bass guitar). This will be the first time this line-up has played together in public since their first two 'reunion' shows at Austin's legendary Liberty Lunch in December, 1996.

Tickets go on sale in Austin on 6/16 through Star Tickets. We know we're getting the word out late, but we want you to know ASAP so Soulhat fans will have a chance to snatch-up their tickets to shows that will almost surely sell-out before July.

[3/15/05] MORE FROM SXSW+! You can see and hear ex-Soulhat guitarist Bill Cassis, playing backup for Charlie Sexton for the remainder of SXSW, at least (no word on whether this will become a regular gig). Check auschron.com for up-to-date local and tour information.

If you're a fan of Billy and/or ex-Sister Seven guitarist Wayne Sutton, be sure to check-out Wayne's latest CD, "Walking Disaster," available very soon via his web-site. The new disc was recorded in Luck, Texas by Willie Nelson's personal engineer (and a great musical talent in his own right) Matt Hubbard, and features both Carolyn Wonderland on vocals, and Bill Cassis on harmonium and lap steel.

If you liked Wayne's last record "Heart of the Donkey," we know you'll dig this one ... though we think its fair to say that "Walking Disaster" is something of a departure from his previous solo work. He's growing leaps and bounds as an artist, and we're sure proud of that. Anyhow, give Wayne a visit over at www.waynesdonkey.com and look for more info on the new LP soon.

And if you're in Austin for SXSW or townies like us, you can see Wayne at Momo's on March 18. You never know who's going to show up on SXSW weekend, so be sure and see Wayne if you can.

[3/7/05] Thanks to Austin's pop nightingale Sarah Sharp, Soulhat will be included on the soundtrack of the new Jason Lee/Crispin Glover caper comedy Drop Dead Sexy.

Drop Dead Sexy, a new dark comedy filmed in Austin, will make wide use of hometown musicians and bands for its soundtrack, says Sharp, who chose and coordinated the music for the film. the film premiered at SXSW Film on March 12, 2005. The Austin artists featured on the soundtrack run the gamut from pop to hip-hop to rock, punk, blues and pop, providing a glimpse into the eclectic music scene that is an integral part of life in the Texas capital. Along with Sharp herself, the Drop Dead Sexy soundtrack features: 54 Seconds, the Breathers, Boombox, Hayes Carll, the CrackPipes, John Evans, Bruce Hughes, Neal Kassanoff, MC Overlord, John Pointer, Kevin Ryan, Te'rell Shahid, Carlos Sosa, Soulhat and the Southern Backbones.

This is the second time a Soulhat track has appeared on a domestic film's soundtrack. In 1997, The Bonecrusher was used on the US soundtrack for the animated film, Tekken.

[3/3/05] SXSW WEEKEND FUN It's springtime in Austin. And that means three weeks of fun and madness with the Annual SXSW Film/Multimedia/Music Festivals. This year, featuring neverending rain!

In addition to yearly rites of passage, such as GBV Hoot Nite and savoring the delicious breakfast tacos at Las Manitas, natives and visitors alike should be sure and check out our own Kevin McKinney, who will be performing on Friday March 18th at 5:30, over at Castleberry's, 1025 Barton Springs Rd.

Kevin is working on a record right now, so his set is sure to feature some new tunes. But we know Kevin will satisfy with the classics as well. So come on out and see him!

[9/27/04] Hey everybody. Just dropping in to note that Kevin McKinney has a new band, The Small Stars, who'll be making their debut performance in Austin this week: at Ego's, 510 S. Congress, 474-7091. Band cranks it up at 11 pm. See y'all there.

[7/14/04] Y'all most likely know Adam Bork (a.k.a. Earthpig) from his unforgettable photography that graces Soulhat's first two (and last) album covers. But he's also a talented musician in his own right and a multimedia artist who challenges us to see life a little differently.

Well, the indomitable Earthpig is once again leaving the shores of Austin for the greener pastures of ... Marfa? Well, if anyone can get to the bottom of the mystery of the "Marfa Lights," it would be Adam. Anyhow, Austinites eager to hear his unique style and outstanding catalog of original material should be sure and check out one or all of the shows on his Austin "farewell tour." Here's the itinerary:

  • Wed July 14--Continental Club after John Dee Graham. Mandon Maloney on drums w/ Adam Bork..

  • Fri July 16--Flipnotics outdoors. 8:55 Pm. Show is over by 10:30. This is the Pig's birthday -- he'll be playing solo with slideshows and drum machine and sometimes no drum machine.

[7/14/04] Site news: there should be some new downloadable tunes coming soon. For now, be on the lookout for the old files at Soulhat Audio, including selections from 1/19/92, Soul Hat's second performance on Austin radio (including the first public version of "Brian Waltz"). Enjoy. Also of note, there are new exclusive, downloadable tracks on Kevin McKinney's site, too. Enjoy it all in true stereo sound.

[12/18/03] Ah — the Holiday Cheer is here!!! With Christmas in the air, and those work days growing shorter, gifts and vacation time exchanged, it's time for an intimate rock and roll show. The rock show features The Kevin McKinney Band. You know him. You love him. Kevin McKinney. And band. Also featured is the Jay Quinn band. Is he mighty or is he not? -via The Associate.

[12/7/03] Texas mourns the loss of local musician E.R. Shorts, who died in his sleep last Friday (12/5). Longtime Soulhat fans undoubtedly remember Shorts as the bass thumping Houston native who shocked local Austin scenesters by winning the only SXSW (South By Southwest) "battle of the bands" in 1990, along with the help of Bill Cassis & Kevin McKinney on guitars (and whom were singlehandedly thrust into Austin's spotlight then and there). Shorts went on to become a local favorite who played with scores of musicians, including well, frankly, just about everyone who's anyone in Austin.

After battling personal demons throughout the 90s, Shorts had been staging a local comeback with a new band, as of late. He is survived by his mother, Emma Shorts, a pastor in Richmond; and sons Enrique and Ennis Jr. For more, please click here to read the local rag's take on Shorts.

[12/1/03] It's probably not too late — if you need some groovin' tunes to play while you decorate your space for the holidays — to pick up a copy of Kevin McKinney's "12 Holiday Hits". It's a short but sweet addition to any holiday music collection, including Kevin's amazing interpretations of great holiday songs like Winter Wonderland, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Joy To The World & more!

Order early to get your copy by Christmas!

[11/13/03] We'll be on vacation through the end of the month. But if you're staying in Texas, don't hesitate to get yer butt out to see Kevin McKinney live. He'll be rocking Tambaleo on 11/20 at 10 pm. They serve up some of Austin's best margaritas, so head on out and give 'em a try. You can next catch McVein onstage at Continental Club (Houston) on Saturday Nov. 28th. And December should bring us a gig at Stubb's BBQ in Austin. Stay tuned for details.

[11/5/03] Who feels the McVeinia? If you don't, you really need to. Really. Luckily, there are several opportunities to getcha some good time rock and roll. And you don't even have to venture away from cozy confines of your home or office. But we here in McVeinland don't completely encourage this hermetic behavior. Here in McVeinland, we want to see you live and in person, so we recommend that you come see Kevin live and in person. Kevin McKinney EN VIVO at Tambaleo (302 Bowie) this Thursday. He'll be on around 10pm and play til they make 'em stop. As always, he'll be taking requests. With the Hancock Golf Tournament just around the corner, Kevin will also be searching out a caddy. Kevin is defending his championship, so be ready to exhibit some wherewithall about the greens. If you can't wait for Thursday to get your McVeinia fix, check out kevinmckinney.com for some unreleased tracks, spanning the history books of Austin rock and roll. Songs from the Batcave will be updated with all sorts of rare gems penned and played by Kevin McKinney - man, myth, golfer.

[10/7/03] Happy Humpday from McVein and Co.! Wash those half-week blues away at the Hole in the Wall tonight (10/8) with Kevin McKinney. Or start the weekend off a little early tomorrow (Thursday 10/9) with Kevin and friends at Tambaleo. There will be a special acoustic set early Thursday from Jeff Bradbury and Fee of the band Larry.

[9/29/03] There's no way to top release week, so we won't even try. But you should know that there are some McVein gigs this month. October 8 at the Hole the Wall. And October 24 with KLBJ-FM and Dudley and Bob's "Pick-Up Party" at Iron Cactus North. The latter will probably be an early gig (8-10 pm). Stay tuned for details.

[9/21/03] Thanks to all the crazy freaks who came out to see Kevin at the ACL Fest this weekend. It was just an outstanding good time! We also hope many of you continued to hang in front of the Austin Ventures Stage on Friday to see Patrice Pike. Those who did were pleasantly surprised to see Bill Cassis sitting in with Patrice for her entire set. It's always a pleasure to see Bill on stage again, and especially with Patrice and Wayne and the crew.

PHOTOS? If anybody took pictures of Bill or Kevin onstage at the ACL Festival, please .

[9/13/03] News 8 Austin recently interviewed Kevin about the ACL Festival and more. To view the clip online, please follow this link.

[9/10/03] The release date for Kevin's new CD, Talking To Plants, has been set for Tuesday, September 23rd, with the release party scheduled for September 24 at Stubb's BBQ in Austin. Look for complete details in the coming days.

[9/1/03] Ahh, Labor Day, good to see you! With temperatures only breaking into the mid 80s today, one thing is for sure: fall is in the air in Texas. Only another 120 days and it'll be here!

With August gone, the countdown has begun in earnest for the 2nd Annual Austin City Limits Music Festival (Sept. 19-21, 2003), which has become quite the event, even in only its second year at Zilker Park. If you are headed out, don't forget that Kevin will be on the Austin Ventures Stage on Friday, Sept. 19 starting at 2:50 p.m. You can download a complete schedule in Adobe's portable document format (pdf) via the ACL Fest's web site (right-click and "save as" Schedgrids03.pdf).

[8/28/03] It's only fitting that we, and McVein, would return just as everyone is about to go on vacation. Hmm. BUT FINALLY!!! McKinney returns as McVein - that's right Kevin is back, he'll be playing all of your favorites tomorrow night (Thurs. 8/28) and a couple new ones too. It all goes down at Tambaleo - 302 Bowie - the old Electric Lounge. See you there! The new record is set for release in September.

[6/13/03] Kevin McKinney has been confirmed as a performing act for the 2nd Annual Austin City Limits Music Festival, Sept. 19-21, 2003. Other artists include REM, Bem Harper, Al Green, Lucinda Williams, Los Lobos, Galactic, Charlie Hunter and more. Please visit their web site for more details. Click here to visit Kevin's page on their site. Ticket prices go up on 6/14, so get 'em now while they're still relatively cheap.

[5/28/03] It may not be quite what you think, or maybe it is. Kevin McKinney is climbing back on stage at Austin's home of the Blues - that's right: Antone's. Kev will be gracing the stage at 5th and Lavaca at 10:30p on Thursday night, May 29. McVein will be playing after Jon Dee Graham next Wednesday (April 30) so watch out!

The big news is this - Tomorrow night, that's right, Tuesday at the Saxon, is Soulhat night with the McVein 5. As you probably well know, usually we are giving something away in these little emails, be it CDs, knowledge or secrets of the Egyptian Kingdom. It's your turn to tell us what you want. Email eroths_78703@hotmail.com and see what kind of freebie is instored for this week. -via The Associate

[3/6/03] SXSW NOW UPON US: It's that time of year -- springtime. And in Austin that typically means amazing displays of wildflowers, lethal swarms of mosquitoes, and the mega-event we call SXSW. The Music Conference portion of SXSW is March 12-16. And yes, Kevin McKinney will be performing at SXSW Music. His showcase slot is Thursday, March 13 at 12:00 a.m. at The 18th Floor at Crown Plaza (N. 500 IH-35, 18+). For more info., visit the SXSW web page at sxsw.com and see Kevin's page here. Brave the crowds and come support Kevin!

[3/3/03] GEE THAT SONG SOUNDED FAMILIAR: Soulhat had a song featured on the soundtrack of the season premiere of HBO's Six Feet Under (Ep. 27, 3/2/03). The song was "Flat Plane" off Soulhat's last studio release "Experiment on a Flat Plane" (2000). If you're watching the reruns, you can catch the song in the background during the BBQ scene. For more information on Six Feet Under (or the music in this particular episode), visit HBO.com.

[2/25/03] NEWS FROM McVEIN: "Really there is not a lot of golfing one can do in these tundra-like times of rain, sleet, hail and ice. While you ponder your options or load up the newest Tiger Woods on your PC, let me tell you this: The second almost all solo Kevin McKinney is in the mastering stages, and folks, its gonna be a hole in one! You've mused during 'Talking to Plants,' you've rocked to 'Sideways Haircut,' heck you may have even laughed to 'Laugh'. So be ready. It will be out soon. Out to rock you." -via The Associate

[2/19/03] FROSTY'S HEALTH: Review of benefit and new information is forthcoming. Stay tuned. We promise. Many of you have been inquiring about the 1/30 benefit for Barry "Frosty" Smith at Antone's in Austin, as well as the next one. This benefit raised money to cover expenses associated with a recent heart attack. Frosty is out of the hospital with friends in Liberty Hill. For more information, and a special letter from Frosty himself, please visit the web site of Austin's Toni Price.

(Updated) Frosty Fest II is now confirmed for Sunday, March 9th at La Zona Rosa in Austin, with doors at 6:30 and the show at 7:30. Acts confirmed for the event are Eric Johnson, Junior Brown & Soulhat. That's a once in a lifetime bill, wouldn't you say?! Eh? Tickets at the door.

[2/14/03] AUSTIN MUSIC ECONOMY DOOMED?: So you think your city is experiencing an economic slowdown? Try being a working musician in Austin, so-called "Live Music Capital of the World." In a recent issue, the Austin Chronicle's Andy Langer profiles the demise of the Austin music scene due to sky-high rent, declining interest, and the takeover of 6th Street culture by what amounts to yuppies and their shot bars. We found it interesting. Check it out.

[2/28/03] This Saturday, March 1, 2003 the Red Eyed Fly hosts the Austin Incubator semi-finals. The Associate notes, "The Incubator is Kevin and companies ticket to buying a big ass tour bus and groupies and arena rock sized wigs, boas and swagger. Confused? Just come show your support at 5p, cheer loud, paint your face green. McVein! McVein! McVein! Live music at the Red Eyed Fly. Help Kev and company incubate" - "Make me a rockstar!" he sez.

[10/15/02] McVEIN IN GREEN ROLLS ON: The Austin Chronicle's Raoul Hernandez reviews McVein in Green in a late summer issue (VOL.21, NO.49). Click here to check it out. For links to other press on McVein in Green and other records and shows, check out our Resources page.

[10/2/02] By most accounts, the Austin City Limits Music Festival was a resounding success. We hope y'all got out to hear Kevin and his krewe on Sunday afternoon, as well as the 70 other acts who graced those many stages. Can't wait 'til next year! The promoters are asking for tips on the next one, though we suspect they've already heard plenty about lines and buses. But if you have any other useful suggestions, head on over to aclfestival.com and sound off.

[8/16/02] Y'all most likely know Adam Bork (a.k.a. Earthpig) from his unforgettable photography that graces Soulhat's first two (and last) album covers. But he's also a talented musician in his own right and a multimedia artist who challenges us to see life a little differently. We were just turned on to an extensive new interview with Adam over at Rash Magazine online, so we hope you'll go over there and check it out.

[8/6/02] On Austin newsstands as of 8/6, the current InSite Magazine featuring a full-on K-Mac interview - dishing details on the new LP, the future of Soulhat, the Austin music scene, the demise of the Black Cat, and more. They don't have an archive, so click here to read our reproduction.

[8/5/02] Kevin McKinney is one of many great artists due to perform at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, September 28-29, 2002 at Zilker Park in Austin, Texas. The scheduled lineup now includes Jimmy Vaughan, The String Cheese Incident, Emmylou Harris, Los Lobos, Soulive, Wilco, The Jayhawks, G-Love & Special Sauce, Karl Denson, Kelly Willis, Pat Green, Shawn Colvin, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Patty Griffin, Eric Johnson, Gillian Welch, Ryan Adams and many more. Click here to see Kevin's page or here to visit the festival page.

[7/7/02]Unbelievable. One of the last great live music bars on Sixth Street is gone. The Black Cat Lounge was the scene of a three-alarm fire early Saturday morning (7/6) -- essentially burning to it's shell before being extinguished, and damaging several nearby businesses in the process. Neither Sasha Sessums nor current owner Roberta Pipes have expressed any opinion as to whether or when it might be rebuilt.

Though many consider its heydey the early 90s (when Soulhat, Little Sister and Joe Rockhead dominated its Sixth Street stage - err, and let's not forget Kelly Willis, The Robison Brothers, Chris Duarte, Ian Moore, E.R. Shorts, Ugly Americans, Pushmonkey, Dale Watson, et al.), the Black Cat Lounge continued to be a shining beacon of light (and rock and blues), well into 2002. The fire follows another terrible loss for the club and the Austin music community, the death of original owner, Paul Sessums, in 1998.

To read more about the fire and the Black Cat Lounge, visit the Statesman. and continuing coverage in the Austin Chronicle.

[6/11/02] Last Thursday's Austin Chronicle features a nice profile of Austin music pioneer Patrice Pike. It's a "short history" of Patrice, Little Sister, label sign/woe, The Black Box Rebellion & the whole group's emergence from Austin's "jam band" scene of the early 90s. Check it out.

[5/24/02] OK, OK, so we're a week late with the rebuild, the new design is heinous, and there are still lots of old-style pages. But hey, we're back just in time to spread the word about McVEIN IN GREEN, which will be officially available at Kevin's show on May 24 (11 pm, Mercury @ Jazz, 6th St, Austin). We assume you can also get a copy at the The Saxon Pub (Austin) on Saturday night, as well. Or we've been told you will be able to purchase over the Internet at Chocolate Records. As for the redesign, bear with us. Everything will be active and normal in a matter of days.

[5/1/02] Don't know about the rest of the country, but it is getting HOT down here in Tejas. Whew. All upcoming dates are here, including Friday 5/3 at the Steamboat (Austin), Saturday 5/4 at Club DaDa (Dallas), Friday 5/10 at Hanover's Draught Haus (Pflugerville), Saturday 5/18 at the Satellite Lounge (Houston) & Saturday 5/25 at the Saxon Pub (Austin).

Kevin's Tuesday night shows at the Saxon Pub also continue (usually at 10 pm). And his new record should be out mid-late May. In site news, a long-planned overhaul to our home page will commence next week. Don't be surprised to see a new design, there, around the end of the month.

[3/13/02] John Popper joined the band on harmonica, again, last night at the Saxon Pub. The band played a full 2-hour electric set with John on stage for all but two songs. But for those of you inclined to think this might be a regular thing (after last week's appearance), remember that SXSW is over soon and Blues Traveler plays Stubb's BBQ on 3/21 (9:30 p.m.). Guess they'll have to find a new harmonica player ;). Here are some more items...

SXSW: Soulhat performs at the Loophole Entertainment showcase in the newly reopened Steamboat in Austin on 3/14. The showcase also includes Guy Forsyth, Chris Duarte, and Eric Johnson / Alien Love Child. Soulhat performs in the last showcase slot, at 1 a.m. Remember, SXSWers: badges, then wristbands, THEN folks in line. Good luck.

NEW RECORD: the word on the new LP from Kevin McKinney is that it will be released during April on SHAT Records. The title is "The Man in Green" and it will feature 11 songs, including old favorites like 'Five Dollar Man' and 'City People' & new ones, too (often heard at the Weds. night Flipnotics gigs) like 'Rot with You' and 'The Goodtime Song.' More as we hear about it.

UPCOMING GIGS: include Soiled Dove, Denver, CO (3/30), Storyville, Durango, CO (4/1), Double Diamond, Aspen, CO (4/4), & Tug Boat, Steamboat Springs, CO (4/5-6). The free Wednesday night shows at Flipnotics Coffeespace are over for now, but could resume in late Spring following the Colorado run.

[3/6/02] Congratulations to those of you who braved the humidity to make it out to the Saxon Pub last night. You were rewarded with John Popper, who sat in with Kevin all night. We assume he's staying in town for SXSW & for his gig here with the Blues Traveler band (3/21). Kevin's next gig is tonight at Flipnotics Coffeespace, so we hope to see a full room, tonight (and not just 'cause you think Popper might show up...the coffee is also damn good).

In album news, Kevin wants folks to know that he'll have a solo effort out on SHAT Records very soon. No word on a release date, but we'll keep you informed.

[1/31/02] What's new in the world of Soulhat for 2002? Austin locals will be happy to know that Kevin McKinney continues to do his weekly 'solo' gigs at Flipnotics Coffeespace on Barton Springs Rd (Weds., 8 pm), usually opening for the later act. Johnny V. usually makes an appearance on stand-up bass. Kevin's also been selling t-shirts at recent shows, so pick one up if you go.

In other news, the live recording in Houston at the Satellite Lounge is back on for February 10 & 11. So, Houston fans, here's your chance to be on Soulhat's first official live recording since "Live at the Black Cat." Don't pass up that opportunity!

Check Pollstar for all the latest tour dates.

[7/18/01] Today, Austinites and those lucky enough to be in town should come out and enjoy the free KLBJ concert at Zilker Park's (2220 Barton Springs Rd) Rock Island, featuring Prime STH, Monte Montgomery, Soulhat & Blue October. Monte starts at 7 pm (do not miss). Soulhat at 8 pm. Blue October at 9 pm. Rock Island (2100 Barton Springs Rd) is on the north side of the street. Bring a blanket and a picnic if you like, but remember ... no glass containers & pets must be on a leash. Park along Barton Springs Rd (or under the MoPac bridge for $2.)

[5/10/01] Hope some of you got to hear Soulhat on KLBJ's "Local Licks Live" on Sunday night at La Zona Rosa. The show captured the band's last hour on stage, which included Wayne Sutton and Ian Moore on guitar. We've got more to say about drummers, but that's developing..

[5/3/01] As of 5/1/01, we have released our "virtual link" to the Soulhat Web at texas.net. As many of you know, this site began its tortured life in the fall of 1998 at soulhat.home.texas.net with $5 and a dream that someday there would be up-to-date information about Soulhat on the Internet. While we retained a link at texas.net since moving to this location, it was no longer cost feasible to keep the link there, just for the benefit of people who bought the EP in 1998 [note: the EP contains mention of that old URL]. The end of an era.

[5/1/01] We just finished watching Stephen Barron's "Goldmine" on Channel 16 here in Austin, and were completely blown away. The 58-minute video is a well-produced document of Soulhat live from 1991 to 1993, at La Zona Rosa during the first several Mother Earth's Day Festivals and at the Black Cat on the first night of recording for the "Live at the Black Cat" cassette. Here is our initial review. Track List: Goldmine, Big Backyard, Stranger Things (La Zona), Space/Find the Time, Preacher Man, Neighbor (Black Cat), Prayin' for Rain, Big Nose, Wiggin', Smile (La Zona). Sorry, but as far as we know, Monday night was the only time the video will air in Austin.

[4/20/01] Those of you who made it out to the Saxon Pub on Friday, 4/20, got quite a treat. Conrad Choucroun sat-in on drums and Mac McNabb was back on electric. The band played a fairly mellow two-set show, including the most laid-back Bonecrusher > Dirty Old Man we've ever heard and lots of covers. The classic rock challenge was "No Neck Joe" and the band played a great version of it. No word on whether the lineup change is even semi-permanent, but it was great fun to witness.

[4/16/01] ... WE'RE LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD PEOPLE: been out to see Double Trouble with Bill Cassis? We've got a few scouts in Boston and other towns, but wholeheartedly welcome any random photos, stories or other reports from the Double Trouble tour. Just send them to us courtesy of troublespotting@soulhat.net

[3/20/01] Ain't much Soulhat news to report other than tour dates, but hey - that's something! Upcoming out-of-Texas dates include Fayetteville, AR (4/3), Oxford, MS (4/4), Tuscaloosa, AL (4/5), Atlanta, GA (4/6), Jacksonville, AL (4/7), Nashville, TN (4/11), Memphis, TN (4/12), & Little Rock, AR (4/13).

And since so many of you ask us what Bill Cassis is up to these days, we're pleased to relay the news that as of 3/16, Bill was announced as being a member of the Double Trouble touring band (yes, as in Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble) ! Please check their web site for details on the tour, which begins in Atlanta on April 10. We know many of you will be pleased to get an opportunity to see Bill in action, again. So will we !

[11/1/00] Very little news, save tour dates which you can find on the dates page. Since most of you probably missed Soulhat's return to Kappa Sigma in Georgetown on Saturday, let it be known that their cover of Zappa's "Muffin Man" during Bonecrusher was excellent. They just performed a jam on the theme, but kevin said they could've done a full-blown version. Ask for it on tour, who knows? you might get one.

[9/22/00] NOT MUCH to report on the Soulhat front. The band is still on the road, maybe up in your part of the country. Upcoming east coast gigs include: Mauldin, SC on 9/22, Philly (The Bishop's Collar) on 9/25, and NYC (Mercury Lounge) on 9/28.

Since a couple of you asked, the site has been on hold for a couple of days while we were updated to a new system architecture with our SP. They reset our counter to 1, so we took the opportunity to update it. No, we're not spiking the damn thing. We just added our current number (6452) to the number of accumulated hits at our old location, 19153 and counting. Thought we deserved credit for something.

And If you're just aching to read another review of EXPERIMENT, just click on over to jambands.com. If some of the piece looks familiar, that's b/c the SW review was seized (with our permission, of course) and rewritten by jamband's kind Southwest editor, Chris Gardner. Thanks, Chris!

[6/20/00] At the Mercury show on 5/28 Kevin announced that the new album would be out in "a couple of months." The release date is now set to be July 17 & the title is "Experiment on a Flat Plane". The record will be released by Atlanta-based Terminus Records, home of acts like Big Ass Truck and Col. Bruce Hampton (of Aquarium Rescue Unit and Fiji Mariner fame). We are supposed to get a preview listening session in the near future and will give you all the details we can, once we've heard it. If you have Shockwave installed, you can view the new album's cover and download samples (if you have a fast connection) from at least two of the new album's tracks at the Terminus web site.

The tour schedule has been updated for the summer, except for Colorado dates. At this time, the band is scheduled to play on 6/30 at the Double Diamond in Steamboat Springs and 7/1 at the Aggie in Fort Collins. Kevin also said that they're doing Aspen and Boulder, but we'll have to get back to you on the dates.

[6/20/00] What else is new? We're overhauling the fan Biography to include the latest round of personnel changes and incorporate a nice new essay about the band. Oh, and we also added a bunch of 'new' material to the download site and a new item to the concert art page.

And thanks to this writer's ex-roommate, we now have the December '94 spread the Austin Chronicle did on Soulhat. The full text of that article is now available here. We also managed to scan that same issue's reviews of GTBG and the acoustic EP. Check them out in the Press section. Stay tuned for more ... stuff. It's on the way.

[4/28/00] The new build at www.soulhat.net is up, but we're not sure if everything made it. Please let us know if you find any missing links. We also promise to handle recently-sent e-mail in the coming days. It's been getting backlogged again. So if you've written us and haven't heard back, just give us 'til a couple of days into next week. We'll get to all of them. New downloads toward the end of May, early June. Sorry for the wait.

The last real band news was moved to the news archive sometime last month. STILL nothing to report on the album, but we promise to have more information in the near future.

[3/31/00] We suck, we know. No updates for a month, but it's been a busy one in Austin with SXSW and the Austin Music Awards wrapping up last week. We're busy gathering information on upcoming shows and will be updating the site this weekeend. Hope to get some more media linked for y'all, too. So please stay tuned.

As you may or may not have heard, the Austin Music Awards were given on 3/17. Here's how Soulhat fared:

Band of the Year -- 19. Soulhat (just below Kelly Willis and just above Toni Price)

Male vocals -- 19. Kevin McKinney

Rock Band of the Year -- 7. Soulhat

    Drums -- 4. Frosty

The band was a recommended "sleeper" at this year's other-than-SXSW activities. You can read a little 'bout that by clicking here. To read more of the madness, visit the Austin Chronicle's web site of winners.

[2/4/00] As we're sure some of you know already, Barry "Frosty" Smith has retired from Soulhat. His last show with the band was on 1/22 at Austin's Saxon Pub. Last weekend, Soulhat played two out-of-town gigs with the drummer from Jerry Seinfeld's favorite local band, the Scabs, though it appears the next gigs will be played with yet ANOTHER drummer.

Despite the undeniable fact that Frosty's last departure from Soulhat (in 1994) shortly preceded the breakup of the band, Kevin seems to be pretty excited about experimenting with new people. He told us that the Satellite Lounge show last weekend was their best gig in Houston in a couple of years. And though we can't be anything but shocked and saddened by Frosty's decision, let's hope they find a way to make this work.

There are no plans to cancel any more gigs, so we expect that the current "live dates" list is as correct as it will be for the month of February. Sorry, but no word yet on whether this will be a speedbump for the release date of the new LP that was scheduled to be in stores by the Spring. For those of you who've been asking, yes, Frosty performs on the entirety of the new album. But we don't know much else. We'll share any further details about it as soon as we get them.

[2/3/00] Since the band has been going through some changes, we've decided to give our front page a little facelift and begin a complete overhaul. During this process, certain sections of the site will be down from time to time and you may experience some problems connecting, as well. Fret not, the site that remains will be pretty close to the same as it ever was, and will offer all the same features and material. If you have any questions or comments, please let us know.

[1/15/00] New album update: the LP will be released within the next three months, and more "acoustic in flavor." No word on tracks, yet, but more details are on the way.

Reflecting the return to this arrangement, Soulhat has been sporting acoustic guitars on stage, exclusively, since the Saxon Pub show last November. No word on how long this change will last, but if you go to check them out, beware that the sound may be a little different than you've heard them over the past year.

We heard it again on Jan. 15 at Stubb's, and give the new sound a big 'thumbs up.' It's lively, restless, and you get a much better feel for the dynamics of the music than you do with the heavy electric sound. It's still plenty loud, so don't y'all worry about that.

[1/4/00] Kevin says the band has finished recording the new LP and will begin mixing it, this week. The details are a little sketchy at this point, but he promised it would be full-length, widely available, and feature new and old material. He's also promised to keep us informed of it's progress and ultimate release date, very soon. Stay tuned.

[11/20/99] At the acoustic show on 11/19, Kevin announced that last year's self-titled EP had gone out of print. You may find some copies at stores in Austin (try Tower Records, Waterloo Records & Jupiter Records) and it's still listed as in-stock at amazon.com, but when those copies are gone, that'll be it.

Kevin also said recording of a new album will commence in December.

[11/19/99] Site news: this site has managed to piss-off a whole lot of people with it's seemingly lackadaisical approach to answering mail. We apologize, but much of the backlog is due to a single mail client crash. It's not the band's fault. It's barely even our fault. But we've switched clients and should finally be up and running again. Eventually, all of the mail we've received over the past month or so will be answered, but please be patient.

If you have an immediate need for information, don't hesitate to write.

[11/16/99] In regard to last Saturday evening's show: we heard through the grapevine (the bar at the Mercury, actually) that David Lee Roth paid-off Soulhat not to open his show. This may have been due to the noise restrictions at the Waller Creek Amphitheater coupled with Roth's desire to play a longer set. We weren't there, so your guess is as good as ours. Hope everyone called to confirm ahead of time and no one went home feeling (too) cheated.

[08/05/99] Kevin was mentioned in the July 30th Austin Chronicle as one of the people who kept Liberty Lunch's "Gloriafest" from getting boring. Like to read more? Click here.
